The brothers have come up with new and different service projects to continue to reach out to the University and communities. Also there are many events on the university calender that we would like to publicize for this semester, which include:
Keep on the lookout for more from "The Sons of Darkness" of Montclair State University.
In 1996, Brother Joseph Armstead, graduate of Kean College of New Jersey, decided that he wanted to help young men of color, while in his educational pursuit of a Master's in Counseling in Higher Education at Montclair State University. In spring of 1997, he decided to take on the challenge of having an interest meeting on campus.
The meeting was not very successful, but he felt if he did not try, then he would not be fulfilling his commitment to his five stars. One month later on in the semester, two strong men came in to the Dean Of Students Office and said, "Are you invovled with Iota?". They were interested in learning more about Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. and wanted him to conduct another interest meeting. They decided it was time to start a chapter of Iota Phi Theta at Montclair State University.
In Spring of 1997, Brothers Dennis Isaac and Joseph Armstead crossed six strong centaurs, "The Six Silent Assassins", across the burning sands. Like our Beta Xi Chapter, the other Black Greek Lettered organizations would do things on purpose to discredit the Brothers of Iota Phi Theta. However, Brothers Kenyatta Montgomery, President of the Organization of Students for African Unity (OSAU), Chris Catching, Ambassador for New Students Orientation, and Mark Lawson, Representative for the Board of Trustees, were very respected African American student leaders who had the support of the administration.
The other Greeks on campus realized that the Iota were men who were very involved on the campus, more so than themselves. This seemed to draw more interest to the Iotas because the next school year the chapter had two lines. This made nine new members on MSU's yard. On December 11, 1997, the brothers were receiving their charter from the school.
The other Greeks, finally realizing that the Iotas were here to stay, began to accept the fraternity for who they were: a group of strong, positive African American men striving towards producing mature and productive brothers. Today the brothers are still very involved on campus, and Mark Lawson is the vice president of The National Pan-Hellenic at Montclair State University. They felt our Founders fought hard to get where we are today, and now we must carry on the tradition, not rest upon it.
